The US military has banned its soldiers from using TikTok amid concerns from US lawmakers that the Chinese tech company could pose a national security threat.

Military.com was the first to report the new policy decision, which reverses the military's previous stance on the popular short-form video app.

A spokesperson told Military.com that the US military considers TikTok a "cyber threat" and "we don't allow it on government phones." The US Navy took a similar decision last month to ban the app from government phones.

Army Bans Tiktok Following Guidance From The Pentagon

TikTok is owned by Chinese tech company ByteDance and its ties to Beijing have come under fire from US politicians as the app's popularity has soared. New York Senator Chuck Schumer successfully requested an Army investigation into the app's handling of user data in November, and multiple reports of the platform's censored content could anger the Chinese government.

TikTok has vehemently denied any allegations of Chinese state influence and claimed in its first transparency report that China made zero requests for censorship in the first half of 2019.

There have been multiple reports that the company is exploring strategies to move away from its Chinese roots, including a US rebrand, building a headquarters outside of China and selling a large stake in its business.

Tiktok Not Approved For Use On Australia's Defence Devices

Despite national security scrutiny over the increasingly popular social media app TikTok, Defense Department officials have yet to issue specific guidance on the Chinese-owned platform, which is used by military personnel both personally and officially.

While TikTok is on their radar, they should follow the safety training they received on social media, a spokesperson told Military Times on Monday.

"Threats from social media are not unique to TikTok (although they certainly can be more on that platform) and DOD personnel must be cautious when making any public or social media posts," said Lt. Col. Uriah Orland.

ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, is under investigation by the United States Treasury Department's Foreign Investment Committee, The Associated Press reported Friday, over its 2017 deal to buy U.S.-based video messaging app Musical.ly — the same year it launched it. TikTok, an earlier version of the app available only in China, now has more than 26 million monthly active users in the US.

Sen. R-Florida. The review comes after Marco Rubio sent a letter to the Treasury in October asking for an investigation into the national security implications of a Chinese company dealing with US user data under Chinese law.

"...facial recognition, location data and A.I. image scanning techniques allow the Chinese government to obtain sensitive information," Rubio said in a statement to Military Times on Tuesday. "In the wrong hands, this information poses a threat not only to the subject, but to America's national security."

Two other senators, Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, and Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, asked at the end of the month for the US intelligence agency to evaluate not only TikTok but other Chinese-owned platforms. They argue that even if these countries keep US data in the US, they are still bound by the Chinese government's data sharing rules.

"...We don't have the privilege of earning the trust of users and regulators in the US. Part of that effort includes working with Congress, and we're committed to that," a TikTok spokesperson said in response to questions, according to the AP. It adds that its data is not subject to Chinese laws and does not remove content the Chinese government deems offensive.

Concerns Rise Over Possibility Chinese Could Use Tiktok To Collect Troops' Data

In turn, DoD and the military services conduct annual cyber awareness training for all forces that includes instruction on how to keep their information secure online. This includes turning off geo-tagging in apps and controlling what they share about themselves or their family.

Concerns arose in 2018 after reports that the apps could hack into logged flights and routines to understand not only the crew but also which sensitive sites they were visiting.
